Beware of WordPress Free Themes

You should be very careful when using free themes.
The bad things that can happen vary from warnings, if you change the footer (sometimes rendering you unable to login ) to hidden links, malicious code, and even allowing someone else to have access to your files.

One example is the Proglow theme from DUCK THEMES.

Install SATA driver on Lenovo U350 after XP install

It seems that the BIOS reverts to its defaults values on certain situations (loss of battery power, BSOD, etc).
One setting is the SATA native mode : AHCI mode instead of IDE.
Because XP was installed with BIOS set to IDE, this keeps Windows from loading, resulting in a BSOD.
Also, using AHCI should improve battery life and HDD response. Continue reading

Lenovo U350 Wireless Driver for Windows XP

I had a Lenovo IdeaPad U350 downgraded to Windows XP. In order to make the wireless card work, you must install first Lenovo Energy Management utility, in order to make Fn+F5 buttons work. Also dont’t forget about the wireless switch located in the left corner of the laptop.
You will also see the third LED on, under your touchpad.

Memtest problem

The image below is from a computer with issues on it’s motherboard and also a faulty RAM. If memtest is started for the first time it shows the RAM having an error around 399MB address. If I choose to restart memtest this is what i get :

Memtest problems on a faulty board with faulty RAM

Memtest red line

The board has problems powering, even if all other components are changed (including PSU). I can only power the board only by keeping the power switch on and plugging the power cord. I’ve changed the power switch too.

VMWare ESXi 5 I/O performance problem on IBM x3250

After upgrading to ESXi 5.0 from ESXi 4.1 Update 1 because I could not install it on my LSI 1064E hardware RAID, my IBM x3250 4364 server showed poor I/O performance when downloading stuff. In the logs the message was :

Device xxyyzz performance has deteriorated. I/O latency increased from average value of 80631 microseconds to 3395272 microseconds.

You can see the screenshot with the error logged below.

ESXi 5 hardware controller problem

ESXi 5 problem on LSI 1064E

My solutions are : try another pair of HDD’s, try another controller model (i only have this one), or try VMWare ESXi 3.5 U3, according to this post.

The RAID Bios version is the latest : 6.22.00
The firmware version is : 1.18.86.
It seems that there are 2 versions of LSI 1064E controller : 1 MB and 2 MB.
My IBM x3250 4364 has the 1 MB version. For those who have the 2 MB version (newer servers), here is a link.

I will update this post as soon as I find the best solution.

Update 1 – 23.11.2011: Leaving only one HDD made the ESXi 5 unable to boot. I’ve used the other HDD and i had the same result. So RAID1 in my case didn’t work for booting, but the data was there.
I used only one HDD, and installed ESXi on a USB stick. But the “performance has deteriorated” warning it’s still present.

Update 2 – 3.01.2012: Write caching was disabled for the LSI 1064E card . I enabled it, but i still have the same message.
