If you have a Acer Aspire One laptop and it freezes suddenly, this post can help you :
Machine : Acer aspire one D257 with 1 GB RAM, Windows 7 Starter preinstalled.
CPU : Intel Atom N570 (1.66 GHz, 1 MB L2 cache), 1 GB DDR3 memory, 250 GB HDD.
The machine hangs when installing Office 2007 through wireless. It froze again at the second attempt , at a different point.
You must manually power off the laptop by pressing the power button for a few seconds. Windows complains about not being shut down properly. No errors found in Event Viewer. I also used memtest to check the RAM.
After a brief search , i found a solution in this forum : the wireless adapter (or at least it’s driver) – when it’s used for large file transfers it causes the computer to freeze.
I tested this by copying a movie over wireless and it froze again. I couldn’t try to repair the laptop because the owner said it won’t use the wireless for large transfers.
But my suggestions are : use another wireless driver, test using a Live Linux CD, play with settings for the wireless adapter in Device Manager. Maybe try an upgraded version of Windows 7 (32 / 64 bit Home / Professional / Ultimate).
If you solved the problem i expect feedback.

Hi,
I have upgraded the driver to 14.2… something. The latest version. When downloading any bigger file, it still freezes. I tested via a cable and it downloaded fine. I also disabled nested networking and it is still getting stuck. Will try installing XP now.

An easier way would be to test the wireless using a Linux Live CD (Slax , Ubuntu, etc).
This way you won’t have reinstall your OS. Unfortunately I don’t have my friend’s laptop at the moment , to verify this myself.
Try flash to latest BIOS

Flashing the bios certainly helped me. Thanks

Download the untouched ISO, delete a file, and burn IT or use USB stick to install it. Details here Where can I download the Windows 7 starter ISO?
Updating BIOS has helped me as well – thank you very much 🙂
changing from auto 802.11 b/g to only 802.11 b work for me, but this slow the wireless connection
